Its absence is not proof of a problem, but its presence is a point in a product’s favor, and we weight it accordingly in our ingredient scoring.
Layer 3: Cross-referencing the published evidence
We check whether the product’s specific ingredients and strains have published support, and whether the published label-accuracy literature raises red flags about the product category. This is where our process connects to the broader evidence base: a product can have a beautiful label and still belong to a category with a documented accuracy problem, and we factor that context in.
Layer 4: Laboratory assay (where applicable)
For selected products, independent laboratory assay — plate counts for viable organisms, gravimetric or HPLC analysis for inactivated material — is the definitive check. We are transparent that this layer is resource-intensive and is not applied to every product we review. Where we have not run an assay, our ingredient score rests on Layers 1-3 and is framed accordingly. We do not present label review as laboratory confirmation.

Purity is not one thing. Identity asks whether the claimed ingredients are present at all. Potency asks whether they are present in the labeled amounts — and crucially, whether they remain so through the product’s shelf life, which is where viability-based products most often fail. Contaminant testing asks whether the product contains things it should not — heavy metals, pathogenic microbes, undeclared adulterants. The Certificate of Analysis: Useful, With Caveats
A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is a document, ideally from an independent laboratory, attesting that a batch meets specified standards. A genuine third-party CoA is valuable evidence. But the word is also used loosely — a manufacturer’s own in-house CoA is not independent verification, and a CoA can be selective about which tests it reports. We treat a CoA as meaningful when it is recent, batch-specific, from an accredited independent lab, and covers the dimensions that matter (identity, potency, contaminants). A vague or in-house CoA moves the needle little. This skepticism is not cynicism; it is the same standard we apply to every other claim.
What We Cannot Verify — And Say So
Intellectual honesty requires naming our limits. We cannot, through label review alone, confirm that a product contains what it claims; only an assay can do that, and we do not assay every product. We cannot verify a manufacturer’s internal quality controls without an audit. We cannot detect every possible adulterant without targeted testing. When owners hear “purity,” they most often think of contaminants, and this dimension deserves its own attention because it is the one most invisible to label review. A product can contain exactly the organisms it claims, at exactly the labeled potency, and still carry an unacceptable burden of heavy metals, pathogenic microbes, or undeclared adulterants — and you would never know from reading the package. Heavy-metal contamination is a recognized concern across the broader supplement industry, and microbial contamination is an ironic risk in products whose whole premise is the deliberate presence of microorganisms: the manufacturing discipline required to include the right organisms reliably is the same discipline required to exclude the wrong ones.
